Development of a process and system technology for targeted tribological surface functionalization by means of Femto Pulse Forging®, excluding harmful X-ray emissions.

Even though laser machining processes in burst mode have been studied for almost 20 years, it has only been thanks to work at the Laser Institute at Mittweida University (LHM) and at ACSYS that MHz bursts have been used in industrial laser applications for a few years now.

A further increase of the intra-burst frequency into the GHz range and a reduction of the pulse duration into the femtosecond range offers immense potential for the surface functionalization of medical implants, the minimization of wear on the running surfaces of bearings or the optimization of the cutting surfaces of tools, but results in a significant increase in the X-ray radiation released from the laser process. Accordingly, in addition to researching the aforementioned laser processes, the funded project will implement corresponding safety concepts and thus implement the requirements of the Radiation Protection Act in terms of mechanical engineering and organization.

The aim is to provide the end customer as the operator of an ultrashort pulse system, which is now treated as a “system for generating ionizing radiation”, with maximum safety in system operation and the best possible support in the display process, in addition to innovative laser processes and modern precision systems.
