Innovative milling tools with hierarchical cutting edge architectures for the efficient processing of natural stone

Due to their specific mechanical and optical properties, natural stones are suitable for a wide range of applications as a high-quality design, building and construction material. Today, however, carving the desired shape out of a block of rock is tied to lengthy and inefficient grinding processes with corresponding tools, which are characterized by low removal rates combined with very high energy consumption, coolant and cooling water consumption and tool wear.
The project therefore aims to research innovative milling cutter designs with geometrically defined multiple cutting edge configurations and novel hierarchical cutting edge architectures, which promise a significant reduction in cutting energy and at the same time significantly increased tool life.
In the project, ACSYS Lasertechnik GmbH is manufacturing a high-precision demonstrator system that uses ultrashort pulsed laser systems to generate both the macro-geometry of the cutting edge and chip surface and to optimize friction and material dissipation through adapted microstructuring.
